My books

Sonali is the photo-memoirs of the author’s life in rural northwest Bangladesh. Taken from the area where Ken Powell lived and worked for many years, the book is a celebration of ordinary life in Bangladesh. More than 50 photos with text (in both English and Bengali )which reflect a taste of the beauty not just of the land but of the people who reside within, this is the author’s homage to a land he is proud to call ‘home’.The book is an excellent introduction to the culture of this little-known country and useful for anyone learning Bengali to sharpen their reading skills with Bengali and English on the same page.
When 12-year-old Sophie Shepherd is orphaned after a motor accident she is left scarred both physically and emotionally. Recovery is slow – first at hospital, and then living with her only blood relative, her aunt. Her nightmares torment her and Sophie is withdrawn and fragile. But rather than support her, a jealous and cruel uncle-in-law destroys her life all over again. Dumped in rural Bangladesh without warning, with an uncle she didn’t even know existed, who she hates, and who doesn’t want her there, Sophie has to come to terms with grief, loss, and a totally alien culture.
Ever wonder how you’re going to remember all that stuff you need to know for that exam coming up? No need to worry. With this book in your hand you’ll have all the tools you need to memorise any fact, information, theory, name or number – pretty much anything, in fact – and do so under pressure of time or nerves. What’s more, you’ll memorise faster than ever and will have a system which allows you to recall anything you want reliably, every time. The only thing to worry about is that this technique is so silly you might actually laugh out loud in the test. Revision has never been so much fun.
Twenty-two short fiction stories and semi-fictional essays which individually stand alone but together takes the reader on an imaginary journey from childhood in 1980s Britain to adulthood as a teacher, to life in Bangladesh and finally to old age (and beyond) in contemporary Britain.

Hello, I’m Ken.

Welcome to Write Out Loud, my blog dedicated to all sorts of things to do with writing.

This page will be updated constantly every week with book reviews and writing-related stuff.

The blog is the baby sister of my personal blog kenthinksaloud where I write ‘Monday Murmurings’—insights into life and philosophy. Get a clever take on politics with ‘Wednesday Banker,’ and ‘Future Friday’ for the latest in psychology, environment, and tech.

I will use this blog to give helpful advice, tips, tricks and resources as I come across them to other writers and to advertise my own writing especially as my books start to be published.

Sign up to support and keep informed of all that’s going in my writing life and (I hope) to get useful, free help in your own writing career.
