For Whom the Book Tolls Episode 2: Hitler by Ian Kershaw

Welcome back for our second podcast!

In this podcast, my good friend, Nicholas Graham, and I discuss the brilliant biography of this notorious figure in history. This is the condensed single volume of Kershaw’s immense two-volume opus. It sounds heavy-going and, to be honest, it is. But that’s mainly because of the ominous nature of Hitler’s life and his legacy. Kershaw is a superb writer and makes this difficult material as accessible as possible. We both highly recommend the book.

Nick throws in a couple of other books about Hitler worth a go. His choices might surprise you!

Some controversial points are raised and both myself and Nick want to reiterate again how much Hitler is reviled and rightly so. Discussions are academic in nature and not intended to condone, in any way, the atrocities of which he was the mastermind.

I expound a little more on some of my ideas in my own review of Hitler by Ian Kershaw. Click the link if you’re up for more…

There’s a few minor glitches – apologies again for that. We’re not experts in this and are doing our best!

Some of the books mentioned in the review are:

Nicholas Graham is the author of historical detective fiction ‘The Judas Case’ which won a Northern Writers Awards New Fiction Bursary, and is currently working on its sequel, ‘Solomon’s Vineyard’. He was a member of the Sidney Sussex College Cambridge team that won BBC2’s University Challenge – Reunited series. He lives with his partner in a remote coastal village close to a decommissioned nuclear power station, a location he regards as being at the heart of the realities of the age. Social Entrepreneur, educationalist, bestselling author and journalist, D K Powell is the author of the bestselling collection of literary short stories “The Old Man on the Beach“. His first book, ‘Sonali’ is a photo-memoir journal of life in Bangladesh and has been highly praised by the Bangladeshi diaspora worldwide. Students learning the Bengali language have also valued the English/Bengali translations on every page. His third book is ‘Try not to Laugh’ and is a guide to memorising, revising and passing exams for students.

Both ‘The Old Man on the Beach’ and ‘Sonali’ are available on Amazon for kindle and paperback. Published by Shopno Sriti Media. The novel,’The Pukur’, was published by Histria Books in 2022.

D K Powell is available to speak at events (see his TEDx talk here) and can be contacted at dkpowell.contact@gmail.com. Alternatively, he is available for one-to-one mentoring and runs a course on the psychology of writing. Listen to his life story in interview with the BBC here.

Hello, I’m Ken.

Welcome to Write Out Loud, my blog dedicated to all sorts of things to do with writing.

This page will be updated constantly every week with book reviews and writing-related stuff.

The blog is the baby sister of my personal blog kenthinksaloud where I write ‘Monday Murmurings’—insights into life and philosophy. Get a clever take on politics with ‘Wednesday Banker,’ and ‘Future Friday’ for the latest in psychology, environment, and tech.

I will use this blog to give helpful advice, tips, tricks and resources as I come across them to other writers and to advertise my own writing especially as my books start to be published.

Sign up to support and keep informed of all that’s going in my writing life and (I hope) to get useful, free help in your own writing career.
